While student achievements can often be represented by gilded awards, certificates, and plaques, it is rare for the entire world to be able to taste it. When it comes to recent Chaplin School graduate Jenifer Bound’s Holy Smokes Pork and Meat Rub, it is now possible to do just that.
While she was still a student in Fall 2013, Jenifer won a competition hosted by the Chaplin School and Badia Spices, devised to promote innovation and entrepreneurship concepts to students. Now, a few short months later, her winning formula is being sold in 86 countries.
“I am thrilled and honored. It was an amazing opportunity for me to test my imagination and my ability to contribute original ideas to the industry,” said Jenifer.
The unique blend, a combination of smoked paprika, white pepper, roasted garlic powder, cumin, smoked sea salt, cocoa powder, chipotle chili powder, and brown sugar, was launched at the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE last February. It won Jenifer a $5,000 scholarship, and a percentage of the worldwide sales of the spice will benefit Chaplin School students in perpetuity.
“Our partnership with Badia Spices gave us the opportunity to provide one of our students with a once in a life time opportunity,” said Mike Hampton, dean of the Chaplin School. “Through our various partnerships with industry leaders like Badia Spices, we continuously offer our students opportunities like this one that give our students invaluable exposure and industry experience.”
Locally, Holy Smokes can be found at major retailers, such as Publix, Winn-Dixie, Sedano’s, Presidente Supermarket, Bravo Supermarket, Western Beef, Broward Meat and Fish Company, and Milam’s Market IGA.
