Chaplin Faculty Leads Research for National Industry Survey

It all started in the Summer 2012 when Miranda Kitterlin, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Chaplin School, joined Professors Michael Moran and Percival Darby in Tampa, Florida as presenting guests at the National Association of Concessionaires (NAC) annual meeting. In an effort to better understand the industry and its members, NAC partnered with Dr. Kitterlin and initiated the Concessions Industry Data Survey. "Working with an academic research partner like [FIU Chaplin School] brings an outside big-picture perspective, added credibility and helped us deliver better information to the industry and other interested parties,” highlighted director of communications for NAC and author of the study, Chris Dammann. “We have already started talks about how to take the initiative to the next level and we look forward to continuing the long standing relationship between NAC and FIU,” added Dammann. “This project was a great opportunity to interact with the industry and stay current with the trends,” remarked Kitterlin. New Classroom Aims to Revolutionize the Educational Experience

After two years of conceptualization, design, and the complete overhaul of a tired, multi-purpose room inside the Hospitality Management building, the Chaplin School has completed the transformation of a new classroom into one of the most innovative learning spaces of its time. The classroom challenges traditional pedagogical methodology, removing the educator from the front of the class. At the center of it all, you will find cutting-edge technology and modular-style furnishing, providing educators and students with an environment carefully devised to encourage new levels of engagement and collaboration. While the new space still includes a white board, it is not surprising that this old tool takes a back seat. Given the five interactive LCD touchscreens raging from 70 to 80 inches, the three HD cameras and microphones at three different speaker zones, and the capability to stream, receive, and capture video simultaneously, you could say the roughly 1,000 sq. ft. space contains as much technology as a presidential control room. And so far, since faculty began using the classroom at the start of the Fall 2014 semester, the reaction has been passionately positive. “I love this new classroom. It removes barriers between the teacher and students. A class becomes more of a mutual discussion than a lecture, which makes learning fun,” said hospitality law professor John Thomas. The pragmatic use of technology in this room, which can be employed effortlessly, gives students an exceptional learning experience. “Technology plays the most important role in modernizing education. The abundant media technology in this classroom places the student in an environment that is connected with current student values, where multimedia, online communication, and peer-group interactivity carry profound importance,” said Dale Gomez, director of information technology at the Chaplin [...]

Chaplin Professor Opens the New York Times Global Roundtables Series at BBC for Fall 2014

On Tuesday, September 9, Nancy Scanlon, Ph.D., associate professor at the Chaplin School moderated the New York Times Global Roundtable on climate change held at Biscayne Bay Campus, the first event of the series for the 2014-2015 academic year. Students who attended had a chance to learn about key factors that have the potential to impact our lives, based on an article published the New York Times on August 26, 2014 entitled “UN Draft Report Lists Unchecked Emissions’ Risks”, Dr. Scanlon, a global expert on climate change, highlighted rising sea levels, rising heat temperatures, increased severity of storms, diminishing fresh water availability, and changing weather patterns as being the present and future game-changers. “I really enjoyed the round table event and I think that Dr. Scanlon definitely touched on some key important climate change issues that people might not necessarily be aware of. She emphasized the importance of educating the public on this subject and taking action immediately in any way that we can. It was very eye opening!” said Alex Sherter, hospitality management graduate student. Read the full article on the New York Times website. Carnival Gold Scholar Carries the Torch of Knowledge at Class of 2018 Freshman Convocation

While graduation serves as an exit ceremony for FIU grads, the Freshman Convocation is a University tradition, a formal welcome for freshmen and their families and friends, to the Panther family. This year, Kandys Temes was one of the four students selected to represent the 4,500 incoming freshmen expected to graduate in 2018. The ceremony took place on Sunday, August 24 in the U.S. Century Bank Arena at FIU's Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC). The event was hosted by the University President, Provost, and distinguished faculty and staff. "Kandys was selected to represent her class and carry the Torch of Knowledge because she embodies FIU's Worlds Ahead qualities: academic excellence, community engagement through volunteerism, and a commitment to advance," stated Valerie Morgan, assistant dean of undergraduate education. "Of every incoming freshman at FIU, I was chosen to be one of the four distinguished enough to take part in such a remarkable event. I am filled with gratitude for everything FIU has brought my way in such a short time. I cannot wait to see what the next four years have in store for me. I am proud to be a Golden Panther and call FIU my home," said Temes. This past summer, Kandys was also selected as one of five incoming Hospitality Management students to be recognized as Carnival Gold Scholars at FIU in the program’s first year. Chaplin Student Lands Job after Using Symplicity for the First Time

When Chaplin School junior Diosmary Vega created a Symplicity account to begin her job search in May 2014, she did not know what to expect. She learned about the web-based program from e-mails sent by the career development staff at the Chaplin School and decided to give it a try. She applied for about seven different jobs, and just few days later, she was already interviewing with two hotels in Miami. Diosmary landed a job with the Courtyard Cadillac Miami Beach Oceanfront in June 2014, a hotel with a history of recruiting from the Chaplin School. "I think Symplicity is great for finding job opportunities and the process is really simple. I was working at a bank before and had no experience in hospitality. Symplicity helped me get my foot in the industry," Diosmary said. The J. Willard & Alice S. Marriot Foundation Career Development Program has made Symplicity available to Chaplin School students in January 2012. During the 2013-2014 academic year, over 1,700 opportunities for jobs, internships, and volunteer positions were posted. Currently, close to 4,000 students are actively using the system and over 2,000 employers are registered. The office has a dedicated staff who assists students and alumni with professional development workshops, resume and portfolio advising, as well as targeted job search. Chaplin School career advisor Lourdes Gomez was recently profiled in FIU News. Read More
